A Short Guide to SEO

SEO or search engine optimisation is one of the most popular ways to get traffic to your website. After all, organic traffic is not only cheap to get but it also lasts for many months and even many years without much investment. This is quite unlike paid traffic where you only get traffic that you pay for. So, any digital marketing strategy should also include SEO, even if the main focus is on buying ads. This article will now cover some of the basics of search engine optimisation so that you can start implementing it and experimenting on your own.

Finding the right keywords is essential for success. For example, if you have a dog grooming business, then you’d want to get traffic for dog grooming and dog care keywords. Now, it is best to go for long tail keywords as opposed to shorter keywords such as “dog”, “german shepherd” etc. Those shorter keywords have a lot of potential traffic, but they also have a huge amount of competition. So, you should go for long tail keywords such as “best dog grooming tips” etc. If you’re not sure about how to find keywords, then you should use a keyword research tool such as Semrush. There are even free ones that you can use such as the Google Adwords tool.

Next, you will need to learn how to use those keywords to do on-page SEO. You will need to organise your keywords so that you have groups of related keywords. It is best to prioritise the higher search volume keywords and put them on the second tier of your site, which means they are linked to from your home page. Each page’s main keywords should be used throughout the page but it is best to keep their density under 3%. This will ensure that your page does not get an over optimisation penalty. These are quite common, especially when you repeat a particular keyword multiple times. It becomes obvious that you’re trying to rank for it by gaming the search engines.

The next factor that you will have to pay attention to is off-page SEO or building backlinks. If you do good on-page optimisation and choose your keywords correctly, then you will likely get a good deal of traffic without having to build backlinks. However, in most cases, it is necessary to build links to get results faster, improve the authority and trust of your website etc. There are many different strategies when it comes to building links and these include guest posts, resource page links, Skyscraper links, PBNS etc.

The most effective and fastest way to get links is through guest posting. You will need to reach out to other related websites in your niche and pitch them a guest post. If they have guest posting guidelines, be sure to pay attention to them and follow the instructions. This is a very effective way to build links, once you keep at it. Another way to build links is by getting resource page links. Resource pages are basically pages on a website where recommended resources are linked to. You can then approach websites with these pages and pitch your own page that you think would be a good fit for their resource page. The third type of link that you can get is Skyscraper links. Basically, you will create a piece of content on your website that is extremely well thought out and informative. This page should be better than most other pages on the internet on that topic. Then, you approach sites that link to those pages and ask them to link to your Skyscraper content.

In closing, these are just a few basics of search engine optimisation. Learning SEO is a process and takes time, however, if you put in the work and experiment, you will get results.
